In spite of this worrying situation, a new system, where teachers will be required to renew their teacher certification, is to go into effect in April, 2009. In this paper, firstly I present an overview of the proposed system of teacher certification renewal in Japan. Secondly, I discuss problems that must be solved within the new system. Thirdly, I introduce examples of teacher certification renewal in the United States.
