Mayuyama to suddenly collapse and the area below Shimabara Castle to slide into the sea. This resulted in a giant tsunami in the Ariake Sea, with waves of 10-30 meters claiming the lives of 15,000 people(10,000 from Shimabara and 5,000 from nearby Kumamoto). This is the worst volcano-induced natural disaster in Japan's history. The expression Shimabara Taihen Higomeiwaku was coined at this time. The leaders of the Shimabara fiefdom organized an impressive relief and disaster recovery campaign. Nevertheless, these activities remain relatively unknown in other parts of the Japan.
